FOR YOUTH

PREFACE

A special project started in March 2024: The Rainbow Society Leiden Foundation took on the mission to bring the queer community together through art and culture. Our goal is to contribute to the well-being of the rainbow community and to involve everyone in a unique exhibition that shows that we have always been here, and that we are unique, human, thinking and feeling just like everyone else.

The idea to create an exhibition with amateur artists was born and since then we have been working day and night to realize the first rainbow exhibition by amateur queer makers in Leiden. When we approached the Sijthoff cultural center, they were immediately enthusiastic. We are very grateful to them for allowing us to exhibit our works in their exhibition hall.

We invite everyone to come and discover our works, our adventure, and our lives. Get to know us, listen to our stories, and enter into dialogue with us. Whether you are part of our community, an ally, or think differently, feel welcome.

EXHIBITION OPENING: PRIDE PORTRAITS

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2024

TIME: 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Iedereen is welkom.

The second exhibition, organized by Rainbow Society Leiden, is about freedom, acceptance and non-violence. We explore the theme "World in Pictures", presenting works that offer a unique perspective on the lives of refugees who had to flee their home country due to their orientation, gender expression or identity.

Discover a fascinating collection of portraits and works of refugees, alongside creative interpretations of historical events and personal stories from Leiden, all captured in visual art. This exhibition invites you to reflect on the diversity of the world around us, the strength of society, the fragility of freedom and peace.

Our goal is clear: we want to improve the situation of individual refugees and offer them prospects in the music world. By removing obstacles and offering opportunities for a new life in the Netherlands, we contribute to integration and a positive image of refugees.

LECTURE GENDER, DISPOSITION AND SEXUALITY

FRIDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 20

TIME: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Welcome to our inspiring lecture on gender, orientation and sexuality, presented by leading professors Judi Mesdag and Looi van Leeuwen, who work at Leiden University in collaboration with Rainbow Society Leiden. We conclude with a special dialogue with several refugees who are currently staying in Leiden because their home country was no longer safe for them. Their personal stories will give us a unique insight into the complex reality of gender, orientation and sexuality in different cultural contexts.

During this fascinating meeting we will explore important themes from the perspective of their scientific research fields. What makes this lecture so special is the broadening of the theme to a worldly view. We will not only discuss theoretical concepts, but also explore their practical implications on a practical level.

EXHIBITION OPENING:

LOVE DURING LEADERSHIP

SATURDAY AFTERNOON, SEPTEMBER 28

TIME: 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Welcome to the fourth theme of our exhibition series at Rainbow Society Leiden: "Love in Leiden Relief". The Leids Ontzet is a sparkling party that takes place annually, a celebration that unites people, where we come together to eat, dance and meet each other. It is a time of connection where the city is filled with the smell of stew and where white bread with herring is the traditional delicacy.

This power of love and solidarity is the inspiration for our fourth exhibition. Here we showcase how our amateur artists capture and interpret love through various art forms, including paintings, photography, 3D art and more. Each work tells a unique story and radiates its own emotion, whether it is the joy of falling in love, the sadness of loss, the comfort of friendship, or the search for love.

FESTIVE CLOSING

EXHIBITION MONTH

SATURDAY OCTOBER 5

TIME: 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

After a month full of color, diversity and stories, it is time to end this special journey through the rainbow community. Through art, we have shown the universal humanity of our experiences and desires, and we have called for a world centered on love, connection, freedom and acceptance.

With each powerful theme, we opened a new perspective and explored the complexities of our community. And although the theme "Love in Leiden's Relief" will also be on display during the closing, we also want to share some highlights from previous exhibitions. Enjoy works of art that provide an overview of all the wonderful moments we shared during this exhibition month.
